Elsie and the Child

Arnold Bennett (drawings by E. McKnight Kauffer)

2010

Sewn using unsupported link stitch with secondary sewing and full linen board attachment. Covered in full beige goat with reverse goat onlays of terracotta, purple, green and brown. Applied gold leaf and gold tooling. Top edge is hand coloured, hand sewn headbands and reverse goat onlays on paper doublures.

The images suggest the external order which befits a correct domestic household and the internal chaos which transpires once you lift the cover. The colours reflect the period and are also contained within Mcknight Kauffer’s illustrations. The shapes are again of the period, especially the artist Sonia Delaunay.
