Genesis
Paul Nash
2009
Twelve woodcuts by Paul Nash accompany the first chapter of Genesis in the Authorised Version
The book was sewn using unsupported link stitch with secondary sewing and full linen board attachment. It is covered in full black goatskin with incised design revealing off white Zerkall paper, each is edged with red goatskin inlay. The top edge is hand coloured. The headbands are hand sewn, black with white flash. The endpapers are reverse offset printed on black Bible paper. The inspiration for this design came from the fourth day of Creation when the heavens were set apart from the Earth. It shows the curvature of the Earth and the constellations of the Northern Hemisphere. The endpapers show a detail from Gustave Dore’s illustrations to Dante’s Inferno depicting the Creation of Light. The design is incised to reflect the powerful strokes within Nash’s woodcuts.
